New Harness!

I decided last fall when Murray started having throat problems that there would be no more collars for him!  I have actually become a total harness convert!  I am half horrified at myself for training Piper during his difficult younger years with a prong collar.  I had always had a bad feeling about them, but my trainer convinced me they were the best choice for safe, effective training.  It worked, but I wonder at what cost.  Murray was never in a prong.  He always used a regular collar.  We did use a combo collar for a while, but now, low and behold, we are now harnessing up!  Piper still is walking on a regular collar, but I plan to transition him over as well.  We first bought Murray a front latching harness to further prevent the pulling on his neck.  It worked OK, but not ideal for us.  At their ages, our dogs (and us) have set in place our family walking style.  While I love the idea of front latching harnesses, it just wasn't a perfect fit for us.  We have now happily settled on our Lupine Step In Harness.  It places the "pull" lower on his chest and legs and not on this neck.  His throat issues have been much better.

Safety Note:  Go naked at home!  In our house we have never worn our collars just lounging around.  We only "suit up" when leaving the house.  Dogs can (and often do) get hung up on other dogs during play and other random items with their collars hooked in place.  It can be a very dangerous and harmful situation.

  1. I have been wonring about using A harness. We take off thecollars a home...I always worried about them getting caught on something.

  2. I walk every one but Norbert on a harness and am thinking of switching him

  3. Great looking harness! I have a Freedom Harness for Riley that I really like. It has a ring for a leash on the front and the back so you can use it either way. I like it, but use a collar on Riley most of the time.

Riley wears her collar with tags all the time (except in the crate). She hasn't gotten hung up on anything (yet) and it warns the birds and squirrels that she's coming! Plus, I have to keep an ear on her at all times... :)

  4. We wear collars only when we're out, not at home. We haven't had problems with them...of course, we aren't too well trained either!

  5. It looks good, cool color. We only use a harness for car rides or for a walk in open country. At home I'm always naked :o)

  6. That looks like the ideal solution. We never wear collars indoors for that very reason. Have a super Saturday.
    Best wishes Molly

  7. We have harnesses that our mom MADE fur us... We wear them in the CAR so we can be hooked to the seatbelt thingy fur our safety ... butt... we also use them to WALK when we go places.. It is very convenient fur mom and dad to just unsnap from the seatbelt and snap our walkin strings on... FAST and EASY.

  8. That is a really nice harness. We love our Puppia one, it is brilliant for little necks.

  14. Congrats on the new halter! We rarely wear a collar, only if it is a special occasion. We almost always wear our halters. And at home we just stay naked. Happy Mother's Day to your mom!
