No More Shaming

Is it just me, or are many people very judgmental about how someone acquires a dog?  I am all for adopting from a shelter and giving a dog in need a home, but I don't think people should be looked down upon for going to a reputable breeder.  Now don't get me wrong...I am completely against the numbers of dog stores out there that fill their supply of adorable puppies from horrible puppy mills, but working with a responsible breeder, who actually does everything properly, really shouldn't be an issue in my opinion.  Both Murray and Piper came from a breeder.  Murray was a case of "when you know better, you do better", because I didn't do much research about Piper's breeder but luckily everything worked out.  I was pickier and more careful with Murray.  I have come to decide I would like to mix where my future dogs come from.  I like choosing a newborn puppy, meeting it's parents and raising it with all the background knowledge that is available with a trusted breeder....but I would also like to look through available shelter dogs to see if the "right" one is out there too.  I do believe there are many, many right ones sitting in need in shelters.  So here it is...I came clean...I am a proud breeder buyer.  Judge away!

  1. I certainly won't judge! My present and previous dog came from a breeder! I too wanted a puppy both times. I read all the time about adopting from a shelter. Once I move, and decide to get another dog, I may just do that! I do feel bad for those dogs. Getting a dog from a reputable breeder though, I almost feel like I will have fewer social problems! Your boys are beautiful!!!

  2. Ernie and I (Frankie Furter) BOTH came from GOOD Breeders. It has worked WELL fur US.
The thingy is... all that really matters is that every dog or kitty gets a super FUREVER home.

That is Pawticularly imPawtant fur the puppies that DO come from those awful Puppy Mills.

WE say... get the Puppies OUT and to good homes... THEN get the WORD OUT about the Puppy Mill and try to run them out of business.
WE do not Judge. Ernie and I just HOPE fur the BESTEST fur all the cats and dogs in the world.

  3. From mom: Yes, I think there are many who are judgmental. When we were looking for our Doods we checked rescues but they didn't have any. The more I looked and looked, the more it bothered me that so many pups were rescued from puppy mills. Don't get me wrong, I did not feel bad that they were rescued, I was happy about that, but the fact remains that getting a pup from a mill or rescue is still giving you a puppy that may very well have problems as result of such a horrible start in life. I am a bad rescuer. I am glad that there are people who think and do otherwise and I am glad they are able to give good care and homes to these pups. I am just not one of them. Can't we all just be dog lovers?

  4. Hey, we're scotties and we're Scottie number 8 & 9. SHE love the breed and knows what SHE's getting. So we came from reputable breeders after research.

Roxy is a rescue. She's a surprise! Totally different dog in temperament and in losing hair--but much loved. If we left it up to Good Breeders, we wouldn't have the problems with so many pups needing to be rescued. But that's not going to happen. People need to research the RIGHT dog for their lifestyles and find the RIGHT dog from wherever.

  5. Oh yes! Picking a good breeder is very important...the same as making sure if you get a dog from a rescue or shelter that they are a good fit for your family. We hate those puppy mills though. Our problem is with the pet stores who buy from them and the people who run them. Surely the people who end up with puppy mill dogs are just ignorant...so, we do our best not to judge =)

  6. We came from completely different places, Bites is an AKC registered dude while I am the output of a puppy mill and Shadow is a shelter/rescue gal. Mom & Dad say it doesn't matter were we came from, they just wanted us. As long as our fellow poochies get homes is what is important.

  7. I am with you on this. Knowingly buying a pup from a puppy mill has got to stop. [I believe in hindsight that my first 2 dogs were likely from a mill. I feel horrible about this, but I can't go back and change it and having lived with them for 8 and 6 years respectively, I don't know if I would want to, but that is another story]. However, it is fair for many people to want puppies from reputable breeders and we dog owners need to respect this. There are many reasons to want a puppy from a breeder or a specific breed of dog.

We decided our most recent additions would be from rescues. This was the decision we made. I suspect if other furry friends join the pack in years to come, they will likely be rescues to. This is what I want. This is what works for us.

However, I respect the choices other dog owners make. If a breeder is best for them, so be it! As long as the dogs get loving homes, does it really make a difference if it is breeder or rescue?

Now if we could find a way to end puppy mills, maybe we wouldn't be having this discussion!

  8. Hey, the point is, you ended up with Murry. Ya can't go wrong with that no matter what opinions the rest of the world may have.

  9. We are totally with you! Of the five of us four our from breeders. Mom thinks reputable breeders are an amazing resource and as she and dad like to raise dogs from puppyhood and have specific breeds in mind, they will be using breeders in the future

  10. We agree. We are both dogs from local breeders. It depends on the dog too. There are lots of some breeds to adopt but other smaller breeds like Yorkies are less available. Just as long as it comes from a reputable breeder I don't see the problem.

  11. I totally agree with you on this post. I believe it comes down to both the dog and the breeder.

  12. Ma did look for rescues and adoptions of Airedales in the area, and there were none avaliable, and none in the forseeable future, so she sought out a breeder. Ma has no shame at all about this. Never had. If there had been an Airedale available to adopt, she would have done it. Butts, this breeder is amazin' and I came from good peeps and good doggie stock, and I'm glad she found me, and me her. So, PFFFFFT! to anyone who chooses to make any judgement!

  14. We learned all too well that lesson when we got Bridge from what we thought was a reputable breeder and it turned out it was some kind of puppy mill. She was so ill she was at the vets almost every day for 9 weeks and we spent a fortune. It was worth it in the end though, we love her dearly but I wished I had decided with my head and not my heart.

  15. None of us came from breeders but Mommy says responsible breeders are necessary to keep breeds alive. The key word here is responsible. Sadly, there are more irresponsible breeders than there are responsible ones.

  16. I totally agree withs da Whispies...responsible breeders is key in keepin' da breeds healthy and yada yada yada. Me and my brudder and sissy all camed from a breeder...da same breeder. But when lookin' fur me da family wanted a rescue BUT, it just didn't work out fur many reasons. They decided to get me. It was also important cuz I has a little girl and mum thoughted dat her should has da opportunity to watch a puppy grow. And withs a little girl, a rescue may not has been da best option.
Now, we all came from da same breeder...Albert has been da best dog mum has ever had...then came me, plagued with allergies...then Whitney, she was a breeding dog and came with a million issues including fear and anxiety. Now we knows he prolly wasn't da best breeder but we is loved beyond words.

  17. I'm from a breeder too:-) I don't think it matters where you come from, I mean you could start off life with a breeder and end up just as homeless as a mutt. i think it matters more where you end up.

  18. No judging here....we all know what is best for our own family....

  19. I don't have anything against people using responsible breeders. Every rescue dreams of being put out of business and having ALL dogs come from responsible breeders! It's the puppy mills and pet shops that we want gone.

  20. Both Jimmy and Wilson came from very reputable breeders. I am still in touch with both women. Wilson is almost 10 so obviously this woman cared about her puppies if she's keeping up almost a decade later. Jimmy's breeder actually comes to watch us run at our agility trials. I see her several times a year!

Cardigan Corgis are not a super popular breed (thank goodness!) so there are not many in rescue. You almost have to get one from a breeder as the wait-list for a rescue is very long!

  21. I'm bought from a breeder too, there is nothing wrong with it ;o)

  22. No judging here. Whatever is right for the owner and the dog ;-) There's something for everyone out there... I purchased Gracie from a breeder (she is a misfit however.. lol) and I wouldn't trader her for the world.

  23. Absolutely NO judging from me either! I have been involved with the Golden Retriever Rescue for about 15 years now, and I'm only against people who breed their dogs irresponsibly, never considering the genetic health of the parents and the puppies they produce. I feel strongly that if someone wants to get a puppy, then they should get one from an 'expert' on the breed--That's what I did! :-)

  24. Sammy, Wally, cousin Ella & Ben (the Italian Greyhounds) are all from breeders.

Simone, Talullah, Molly & Belle (our sister & cousin cats) are all rescues.

We agree with you Murray - less judging and more loving.

  25. My bipeds have sometimes felt that people expect them to apologise for getting me as a puppy. The important thing is how you look after your dogs.

  26. If it comes from a reputable breeder or a rescue and the pup is loved, that's just great. I don't believe in these puppy mills or selling them in shops, that is just awful..Have a wonderful Furiday, I love the photo of you both :) xx00xx

  27. They got me form a very good breeder, they found her through the Scottish Terrier Club of NSW... Floyd on the other paw came from a back yard breeder, who, cared a lot but they don't think she knew a lot about what she was doing. We think Floydie's mumma dog was a bit young, and half his litter didn't make it and the other half had to be raised by peeps...

  28. No judging here either...everybody has to do what is right for their own family! Chloe is from a breeder and we raised her from about 10 weeks...and LadyBug's owner passed away so we rescued her from a Bichon Rescue. Everybody has to decide what is the best for them! We love you Murray!! xoxo Chloe and LadyBug

  29. It's a mixed bag of nuts for me. Like you I have no problem with people adopting from responsible breeders.

Although I really struggle with the idea of how many animals are euthanized every day and yet people still continue to breed.

When they are breeding for a specific purpose ie working dogs, hunting dogs etc I have no problem, and if they ARE responsible and will take the dog back if there are problems (without euthanizing the dog)I'm okay. It's the damn puppy millers that really tweak me out.

That being said, I have one that was raised from a puppy and one that was rescued and I have enjoyed having both in my life.
